SANFORD, Fla. — In its self-proclaimed mission to reach all communities within its borders, Seminole County boasts a first for Florida.

Masjid Al Hayy, at 786 Myrtle Street in Sanford, on Saturday will serve as a COVID-19 vaccination site where county workers will vaccinate almost 400 people, officials said Friday.

Seminole County hails it as the first mobile vaccine site hosted at a mosque in Florida. All of Saturday’s vaccination slots are taken, officials say.

Mosque outreach director Minaz Manekia called Saturday’s event “a natural step” that “truly represents the culmination of a year-long effort to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in Seminole County.”

Manekia said Masjid Al Hayy has delivered pizza to first responders and provided food to local schools and homeless shelters, among other services in the area.

“Since we opened our doors, we have always been an involved and active member of the Sanford community,” Manekia said in an email to Spectrum News 13. “Looking after, and advancing the well-being of our community is a core value, and one that we are passionate about.”

Seminole County says it had established past and future sites at a Jewish temple, a Sikh society, a Latter-day Saints meetinghouse, a Methodist church, and a Missionary Baptist church.

The county also says its mobile unit aimed to vaccine over 300 eligible seniors and health care workers Friday at the Hindu Society of Central Florida in Casselberry.

“Our goal is to reach all different communities across Seminole County,” county spokeswoman Andy Wontor told Spectrum News 13 on Friday.

Wontor told of an 83-year-old woman who she said felt more comfortable Friday about getting vaccinated at her place of worship.

“She trusted it,” Wontor said. “She trusted where it was coming from. And that’s kind of the theory behind our outreach plan.”

The mobile unit will return to the mosque in mid-March to administer second vaccination shots, she said.
