ORLANDO, Fla. — Interstate 4 motorists should prepare for two major changes next week that could lengthen their drive time through the "I-4 Ultimate" corridor.

The changes impact the Amelia Street on-ramp in downtown Orlando, while the other shifts on- and off-ramp traffic on westbound I-4 between Conroy Road and John Young Parkway.

Conroy and John Young

Starting late Monday night and heading into Tuesday morning's commute, crews will change the westbound on- and off-ramp.

Westbound drivers trying to exit at Conroy Road will now have to exit about a half-mile earlier than usual in order to get on a newly constructed ramp road.

The ramp road will be shared with drivers looking to merge into westbound I-4 traffic from John Young Parkway.

To get ready for the new configuration, the westbound I-4 ramp from John Young Parkway and the exit ramp to Conroy Road will both be closed Monday night.

Jessica Ottaviano with Florida Department of Transportation said Friday that the adjustment is being made so crews can continue working on the permanent westbound lanes.

When the I-4 Ultimate project is completed, the stretch of I-4 between John Young and Conroy will have a total of 12 lanes, with four lanes of general traffic, and two express lanes in both directions.

Ottaviano urged drivers to be alert with the new changes happening.

"When shifts like this happen, we also have to see how drivers are reacting to those changes," Ottaviano said. "If we see drivers reacting in ways other than what was anticipated, there might be the need for additional signage. We take those concerns into consideration, and we have our crews out here to see what else we can do to help mitigate any confusion there may be."

Amelia Street entrance ramp

The other change happening late Monday night is the closure of the westbound Amelia Street on-ramp in downtown Orlando.

The on-ramp is expected to be closed for 18 months so crews can work on elevated travel lanes.

The detour route continues southbound on Hughey Avenue; you'll enter westbound I-4 from the on-ramp at South Street.

The $2.3 billion I-4 Ultimate project started in February 2015 and is scheduled to be completed by 2021. The project itself is revamping I-4 from State Road 434 in Seminole County to Kirkman Road in Orange County.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article said the Amelia Street closure was an exit ramp, which is incorrect. FDOT officials will close the westbound Amelia Street on-ramp. It has been fixed in the story.
