ORLANDO, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation is transitioning I-4 Express to dynamic tolling on Monday, Feb. 24.
The rate for I-4 Express could be as low as 50 cents per segment, depending on your destination.
Dynamic tolling will adjust the cost of using the express lanes throughout the day as needed, by travel segment. As more people enter a segment, the toll amount will increase. If fewer vehicles are detected, the toll amount will decrease.
FDOT has not said what the maximum toll price will be.
The goal is to keep vehicles moving at a minimum of 50 mph.
FDOT says drivers are most likely to see a small increase on the busiest segments near downtown Orlando during peak hours of 6 to 9 a.m. and from 3 to 7 p.m. on weekdays.
Overhead electronic signs will display the current toll.
Electronic toll collection requires drivers to have a SunPass or other Florida-accepted transponder including: Peach Pass, LeeWay, NC Quick Pass, E-ZPass, E-PASS, PIKEPASS, KTAG, and TollTag.
There is no cash or toll-by-plate option.
Since opening, FDOT said it took less than three years for I-4 Express to record 50 million trips.
FDOT is currently working to extend I-4 Express westbound from where the lanes currently end near Universal to near EPCOT Center Drive. They expect to open those additions in 2027.
An eastbound express lane is also being planned in that area.
Crews are just beginning to work on more express lanes planned from Disney World through Championsgate and Osceola County, to US-27 in Polk County.
