1. New York Rep. George Santos expelled from Congress in bipartisan vote
The scandal-plagued, federally indicted freshman representative from New York was expelled Friday from the House of Representatives by a 311-114 vote, including 105 Republicans, to become only the sixth House member to be removed in U.S. history.

2. Retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, first woman on Supreme Court, dies at age 93
Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism and the first woman to serve on the nation's highest court, has died. She was 93.

3. 2023 Atlantic hurricane season had fourth most named storms since 1950
The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season is over. It will go down as the fourth busiest season since 1950 with 20 named storms. Record-warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures and a strong El Niño influenced activity in 2023.

4. Brevard Book Review Committee reconvenes after months-long hiatus
After nearly an entire semester, the Brevard County Book Review Committee will begin meetings after a hiatus. The committee, which is tasked with deciding whether books are appropriate for school shelves, canceled meetings after members were allegedly doxed and harassed.

5. ‘We should not wait:’ GOP senators urge China travel ban as more children are hospitalized
As reports of a “mysterious respiratory illness” that particularly affects children continue to circulate, a group of Republican U.S. Senators sent an open letter Friday to President Joe Biden, urging him to restrict travel between the U.S. and China “until we know more about this disease.”

6. Orlando ranked top five in U.S. for HIV cases in 2022
Today is World Aids Day, an annual reminder of the struggles to end HIV-related stigmas while also honoring the lives lost to the illness and continuing the work toward finding a cure. 

7. Volusia County's Lyonia Environmental Center and Preserve protects endangered Florida scrub habitat
The Lyonia Environmental Center and Preserve works to protect scrub habitat, which is an endangered ecosystem only found in Florida.

Universal’s Epic Universe theme park take shape

Epic Universe, Universal’s upcoming theme park in Orlando, is taking shape.
