Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced details Friday of the county’s Department of Environmental Services annual household hazardous waste and pharmaceutical collections program.
A study by Cornell University said that pharmaceutical and personal care compounds are in high concentration lakes. Some include metformin, atrazine and carbamazepine in lake water. Microplastics have also been detected in lake samples that can be dangerous to aquatic life and get into drinking water.
“That’s why we’re making it easier than ever to dispose of hazardous items by bringing our collection initiative to our neighborhoods. Just bring your household hazardous waste and pharmaceuticals to one of our collection events and our Department of Environmental Services will handle the rest," Bello said.
Appointments are required for all hazardous waste collections and may be made by visiting the Monroe County/WM Eco Park website.
