VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigator has rounded up a kangaroo that had been hopping around Volusia County for weeks, the state agency announced.

The investigator received a tip that the kangaroo was in a fenced-in area and responded to that spot, along with the kangaroo's owner. They were able to return the marsupial to its home Wednesday.

The marsupial escaped its enclosure on Oct. 17 and had been spotted multiple times in Volusia County.

In Florida, a permit is required to possess many Class III species, including kangaroos. The kangaroo's owner was cited with having a Class III license that had been expired for more than a year, improper caging and failure to notify FWC within 12 hours that it had escaped.

Kangaroos eat plants, so they do not pose a threat to other species. However, they are strong and may defend themselves if they feel threatened.
