ORLANDO, Fla. — Hurricane season is around the corner and now Florida residents have the chance to stock up on supplies that are exempt from sales tax.
Starting on Saturday, people can purchase things like portable generators, dog and cat food, batteries, and more during the disaster preparedness sales tax holiday.
J & L Hardware in Orange County is keeping busy as staff members order more products and sell what they have, as they expect more shoppers to stock up when the sales tax holiday begins.
“Tape is going to be important, just in case your window breaks, and something comes through," store owner Larry Finley said. "I strongly advise the weatherproof type duct tape, something of that nature, they can really hold and withstand extreme weather conditions."
Planning ahead has its perks, Finley said.
“If you’re prepared now, you won’t have any second thoughts,” he said.
Over in Flagler County, leaders are also urging preparedness.
“The next thing that happens is a lot of those critical supplies like nonperishable food and bottled water, batteries, even things like tarps and sandbags, they all vanish in the days right before an approaching storm,” Flagler County Emergency Management director Jonathan Lord said.
Lord said it’s critical to be ready before storm season.
“People need to have a plan in place, have a disaster kit available,” he said.
Back at the hardware store, as prepared as they are, they’ll be ordering more products to make sure people have what they need.
“Sandbags, generators, they’re going to be very important just in case of a loss of power of course,” Finley said.
The sales tax holiday will run for two weeks, starting Saturday, June 1.
Another one will take place in August.
