MELBOURNE, Fla. — Two black-handed spider monkeys are under temporary care at the Brevard Zoo after being illegally brought into Florida.
What You Need To Know
- The Brevard Zoo is caring for Finn and Marceline after they were illegally brought into the state
- They are black-handed spider monkeys, likely 6 months old or younger
- The zoo will be keeping the two in their care along with the other current resident spider monkeys
- The plan will be to move the two monkeys to another zoo, but it could take time
Finn, a male, and Marceline, a female, were found in the possession of someone without necessary permissions, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Their origins and locations of their parents remain unknown. Black-handed spider monkeys do not make good pets.
The Brevard Zoo is permitted to work with the species and was asked to care for them because of its unique three-habitat spider monkey complex and experience. Mateo and J, current habitat resident spider monkeys, came to the zoo at young ages as wildlife trafficking victims.
Finn, estimated by his keepers in quarantine to be about 6 months old, and Marceline, estimated to be about 3 months old, are currently being kept in quarantine and are too young to be returned to their natural range.
The plan is to move them to another zoo eventually, but the animal care team said it could take months or years before they are ready. Although they are healthy, they are underweight but are eating well and getting used to vegetables, the zoo said. Their keepers said they are being trained in behaviors that will help with their care at the zoo and at their eventual home.
Officials with the zoo, which is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, have notified the Species Survival Plan (SSP) program know the two young monkeys are in need of placement. That organization is responsible for ensuring that populations of animals in AZA zoos are healthy and genetically diverse. Confiscated young spider monkeys are in zoos across the United States.
