ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies continuing to search for a shooter who injured a 3-year-old when they opened fire at an Orange County apartment complex on Tuesday evening.

What You Need To Know

  • Deputies say a 3-year-old was injured Tuesday during a drive-by shooting at Hidden Creek Villas Apartments

  • They say the child was sitting in a nearby vehicle when they were shot
  • Deputies say the child is expected to survive

  • Investigators say they are still working to locate the person who opened fire at the apartment complex

Orange County deputies say the child was shot just after 5 p.m. while in a car seat in a vehicle parked at Hidden Creek Villas Apartments, near the Shoppes at Millenia in Orlando.

Investigators say the child, whose identity was not revealed, was taken to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators said they do not believe that vehicle was the intended target of the shooting.

Deputies are still searching for the suspected shooter, but did not release further details about the case.

A neighbor, Sebastien Borneos, has lived in the area for over four years and said his mother was home at the time of the shooting. Like many others who live at the complex, she is considering moving, however; the rent is cheap, which is a draw for many.

“I mean, it’s just sad because a 3-year-old got shot, a kid, you know?" he said. "It’s a young one, so yeah, it’s sad."

Borneos said most people don’t hang around outside because of concerns over crime, but kids usually play outside after they get home from school.

Even though residents say they do worry about crime in the area, Antwayne Hillman said that what happened on Tuesday isn’t the norm.

“I always thought, and I always tell people — this is a nice apartment complex to come to and live, because it’s quiet and there’s not a lot going on,” said Hillman.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.
