When the I-4 Express lanes opened Saturday for the first time, many drivers took the opportunity to try out the new roadway for free. While most of them remembered that the regular I-4 speed limit still applied while traveling express, it apparently slipped the mind of dozens of others who found themselves pulled over by the Florida Highway Patrol over the weekend.

According to information from the Florida Highway Patrol, at least 21 drivers were stopped for speeding the first day the lanes were open. Two of those drivers, troopers said, were caught driving nearly 100 mph in the 60 mph limited-access lanes.
By the end of the weekend, many more drivers were stopped on the I-4 Express lanes for speeding, and more, too, were caught driving speeds upwards of 90 and 100 mph. In all, 77 drivers were ticketed for speeding in the express lanes Saturday and Sunday in Orange and Seminole counties, FHP reported.
Driving in the I-4 Express lanes will be free through March 2. On March 3, an initial rate of 50 cents per tolling segment will be implemented — meaning a person traveling the length of I-4 Express will pay $3.50 going eastbound, and $3 westbound.
After the introductory period, rates will be adjusted based on the number of vehicles using I-4 Express, the agency stated in a release, with current toll rates being displayed on overhead electronic signs before each entrance.
Motorists will be able to pay using a SunPass or other Florida-accepted transponders. Cash or a toll-by-plate option will not be available.
Drivers are urged to abide by the posted speed limits.
