ORLANDO, Fla. — MagicBand+, the latest evolution of tech at Disney’s theme parks, will officially arrive at Disney World this summer.
What You Need To Know
- MagicBand+ to officially launch at Disney World this summer
- The updated version of the wearable device has several new features
- The device has color-changing lights, haptic feedback and gesture recognition
- MagicBand+ will also interact with "Fab 50" character statues, and visitors can participate in virtual bounty hunter game
The wearable device is an upgrade of MagicBand, which debuted in 2013. It can be used by visitors for park entry, guest room entry and Disney PhotoPass.
But the new version is enhanced with new features that, when paired with different experiences, expand the level of interactivity around the parks.
MagicBand+ is equipped with color-changing lights. It also has haptic feedback (meaning it vibrates) and gesture recognition.

One of the new ways visitors can use the device is with the golden “Fab 50” character statues that were added at all four parks for Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration.
As visitors get close to one of the statues, MagicBand+ will start to vibrate and light up. Through gesture recognition, waving at the statues will activate a sound or message from that character.
In a demo Wednesday, the Mickey Mouse character statue said phrases such as, “Gosh, it sure is a nice day” and “Hi, pal.”
The “Fab 50” scavenger hunt can also be paired with the Play Disney Parks app, which will keep track of visitors’ progress and give them digital achievements once they complete the quest at each park.
The app will also have an augmented reality component.
“We also created augmented reality portals that will give you a sneak peek into that character’s world,” said Ashley Murray, product manager with Play Disney Parks.
Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, visitors can use their MagicBand+ to collect virtual bounties in a new experience called “Star Wars: Batuu Bounty Hunters.”
The experience will begin when visitors tap their device at a “wanted poster" in the land. They will then be assigned a bounty. The MagicBand+ will allow visitors to track the location of the bounty in the land. If the device light ups with green and starts to blink faster, it means the bounty is close by. If it the color turns reds, it means you’re headed in the wrong direction.
Visitors will then use the Play Disney Parks app to reveal the bounty via a built-in augmented reality thermal viewer.
The final part of the bounty hunter experience is to get “paid.” When visitors return to the guild master, they will be rewarded with galactic credits associated with whichever character they were sent to find.
The interactivity of the new MagicBand+ also extends to nighttime fireworks spectaculars such as “Disney Enchantment” at Magic Kingdom and “Harmonious” at Epcot, with the device lighting up during the shows.
MagicBand+ is only slightly bigger than the current MagicBand. But one major difference between the two versions is that “+” has a rechargeable battery and comes with a charger and a USB cable.
MagicBand+ won’t just be an East Coast thing. The device will also venture over to the West Coast later this year, marking the first time it has been available at Disneyland Resort in California.
