ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft in June, will lead a trio of rookies teamed up for the Skills Challenge on Saturday night at NBA All-Star Weekend, the league announced.

What You Need To Know

  • Magic forward Paolo Banchero will lead the rookie team in the Skills Challenge on NBA All-Star Weekend

  • The team will include the Pistons' Jaden Ivey and the Rockets' Jabari Smith Jr.

  • Former Edgewater star Anfernee Simons will compete in the 3-point contest

  • Banchero and Orlando's Franz Wagner also will play in the Jordan Rising Stars

The other rookies on his team are Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey and Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr.

The other two teams are the Antetokounmpos — which features two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks and two of his brothers, Thanasis, also of the Milwaukee Bucks; and Alex of the G League’s Wisconsin Herd — and a team from the host Utah Jazz that includes guard Jordan Clarkson, center Walter Kessler and guard Collin Sexton.

In the Skills Challenge, the teams compete in a three-round competition in which they earn “Challenge Points” in team relays, team passing and team shooting. The teams compete one at a time in timed events. In team relays, participants must throw a 35-foot outlet pass at a moving target, dribble downcourt through moving pylons, make a short shot in the lane and a left-corner 3-pointer and then dribble to the opposite goal and make a basket. The NBA has a complete list of rules on its website.

The Skills Challenge is one of three competitions on All-Star Saturday night. The others are the Slam Dunk contest and the Starry 3-Point Contest, which also has ties to Orlando.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Anfernee Simons was selected as one of eight participants in the 3-point event. Simons, named after former Magic All-Star guard Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, attended Edgewater High School in Orlando and IMG Academy in Bradenton. Simons ranks second in the NBA in 3-pointers made so far this season with 196.

Banchero and Magic forward Franz Wagner also will take part in the Jordan Rising Stars competition for rookies, sophomores and G League players on Friday night. Banchero has been selected for Team Pau (Gasol), and Wagner will play on Team Deron (Williams). The four squads that will compete are named after their retired All-Star coaches. Details on the competition are on the NBA’s website.
