ORLANDO, FL – Marking milestones is a part of growing up. For parents watching their child, it’s the first steps or learning to ride a bike that standout.

Over the last 8 years, Orlando City fans have documented their club’s milestones; first win, first game in MLS, new stadium etc.

Maybe the most important milestone in franchise history is the very first.

“I’ve never really been a big dreamer,” said former Orlando City goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo. “I’ve always kind of lived in the moment. I never really thought where this could go.”

The moment the keeper signed with Orlando in 2011, the dream most hadn’t dreamt was already set in motion. Gallardo was a part of a building block of the Lions’ bright future.

“To see the whole story unfold as it has is unbelievable.”

His resume is equally impressive as the story. From 2011 to 2014, Gallardo recorded a franchise record 32 clean sheet with 231 career saves. The captain led City to two USL Championships in 2011 and 2014. The only thing more challenging than claiming victory on the pitch was winning over Orlando as a whole.

“It was hard work going to do appearances when nobody knew who Orlando City was,” Gallardo said. “I feel like that was a big block of the success to this club. Make the community feel like its part of this club, which they are.”

Gaining the community support was another box Gallardo was able to help check. The next step was the most anticipated. November 19, 2013 it was announced Orlando City would become the 21st MLS expansion franchise.

The celebration was followed immediately by a harsh reality. The club released 13 players ahead of their inaugural season in MLS. Miguel was one of those thirteen.

“It was hard for literally five minutes,” Gallardo said. “People live cycles and they have a purpose in life. I feel like I lived my purpose for that particular process.”

After a two-year stint with the NASL’s Jacksonville Armada, Miguel’s playing process concluded with his retirement. His time in Orlando wasn’t close to being finished.

“I don’t really go out looking for challenges,” Gallardo said. “When this one came my way it was a no brainer for me.”

For the past three years, Miguel has served as Orlando City’s color analyst for both TV and radio. He’s well-known for his X’s and O’s insight and trademark energy.

His passion for the game stretches far beyond the broadcast booth or the pitch. As a community ambassador for club, he works to strengthen the bond between Orlando and the city.

“I don’t know that I could speak to how important he is here,” said play-by-play broadcaster Evan Weston. “He’s been as integral as anyone bringing Orlando to this sport, to this club and making it the special place that it is.”

Miguel Gallardo insists he loves to stay in the moment. The keeper is living out his fantasy eyes wide open.

“It’s a dream that I never dreamt of,” Gallardo said. “I have the dream job.”
