D.J. Augustin does not care what the pundits think.

  • D.J. Augustin is not paying attention to doubters as he takes over as the Magic's starting point guard
  • The Magic elected to take a center in the NBA Draft, leaving a hole at point guard for Augustin to fill
  • Orlando coach Steve Clifford praised Augustin's steady play

"I've had doubters my whole life," Augustin said. "I'm 5-foot-11, 11 years in teh NBA. I don't listen to it honestly."

There has definitely been a lot of doubt. And Magic fans have shouted for an upgrade at point guard.

But entering training camp, Augustin is clearly Orlando's guy. Their veteran point guard is not listening to the criticism from outside the organization.

"I don't read that stuff," Augustin said. "I've got a family at home. I focus on myself."

In a league full of star point guards, the Magic chose to select center Mohamed Bamba rather than a guard like Alabama's Collin Sexton. Oklahoma's Trae Young was off the board, a player Magic fans coveted. The Bamba selection added to an already crowded front court.

While first year Magic coach Steve Clifford will juggle Aaron Gordon, Jonathan Isaac, Nikola Vucevic and Bamba at the front court positions, there is no question who is number one at point guard.

"D.J. is easy," Clifford said. "D.J. just gets its. D.J. is detailed. D.J. is skilled. D.J. knows he has to play. I mean he's a pro point guard."

Augustin, who averaged 10.2 points per game last year with the Magic, sees this as an opportunity for him to expand his career. Everyone is watching.

"If I'm starting or coming of the bench, eveyrthing is an opportunity for me," Augustin said.
