Kauai County’s Ocean Safety Bureau is opening registration on May 1 at 7:45 a.m. for its free, one-week Keiki and Junior Lifeguard Program this summer. 

The program trains kids on life-saving techniques and general ocean safety awareness, according to a news release. 

The Keiki Lifeguard Program is open to children ages 8 to 11 who can swim and run 50 yards nonstop, while the Junior Lifeguard Program is open to youth ages 12 to 17 who can swim and run 100 yards nonstop.

The program runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the following dates:

  • June 9 to 13, at Salt Pond Beach
  • June 16 to 20, at Hanalei Pavilion
  • June 23 to June 27, at Kalapakī Beach
  • July 7 to 11, at Salt Pond Beach
  • July 14 to 18, Hanalei Pavilion
  • July 21 to 25, at Kalapakī Beach

The State Championships will be held at Ka‘anapali Beach on Maui on Aug. 9.   

Enrollment is limited. A birth certificate is required for each child. Students will need to bring lunch, sunscreen, goggles, and a towel to each training class. 

The program is sponsored by the County of Kauai, Kauai Lifeguard Association, Hawaiian Lifeguard Association, and local businesses and individuals.
