GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Major repairs are needed after Faith Baptist Church’s sanctuary was damaged during severe storms that rolled into Kentucky.
The church was founded over 60 years ago. Standing minister Susan Lockwood said it’s a ministry with long-time connections.
“I was a member of this church when I was at Georgetown College in 1964 and then just came back this past year to serve on the staff,” Lockwood said.
Scott County emergency management called the church on Sunday, March 30 at 11:30 p.m. about structural damage. Church Member David Baird and five other men are cleaning up debris.
“The corner, what you see the most damage to. It’s kind of ironic. We had a huge cross on the side of the building here, and that’s the portion that was destroyed, blown off. And so we’ll get that repaired and be back in business very soon,” Baird said. “But we’re waiting on insurance and waiting on professional contractors to come in and take over.”
The church offered temporary shelter to the community before the storm began, Baird said.
“Our people had just left and gone home. And then this hit about 11:30. I think it was,” He said.
Lockwood said the church was already experiencing other foundation challenges, and completing changes to its building.
“Just had our basement flooded with all the rain. We just had a huge renovation project as well. We haven’t even completed it, but it isn’t stopping us. The church isn’t the building, the church is the people,” she said.
Lockwood said the church is named “faith” because it’s what founding members shared. She said faith will get them through the tough times ahead.
The church plans to return to its regular schedule on Sunday, April 6.
