A man died after a shooting on Interstate 40 East near Raleigh early Friday morning. A suspect was later arrested.
The shooting drew a massive police response and shut down part of the highway.
Ricardo Baez Cardenas, 35, died later Friday, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office.
Friday afternoon, Josue Alejandro Quintanilla Reyes, 32, was arrested in Durham and charged with murder, officials said.
“Thanks to the hard work of our investigators, we were able to quickly identify and arrest the person responsible,” Sheriff Willie Rowe said in a statement on Facebook. “We also want to thank the Durham County Sheriff’s Office and the Durham Police Department for their assistance and the members of the community who came forward with important information.”
The shooting happened at about 6:20 a.m. on I-40 East near the North Harrison Avenue exit. The investigation snarled traffic during Friday morning's commute.
A video sent to Spectrum News 1 from a witness, who was driving behind the vehicles, appears to show shots being fired from one vehicle to another as they drive east into Raleigh.
The sound of at least five gunshots is heard on the video before a white pickup truck pulls off the interstate onto the right-hand shoulder.
The sheriff's office warned commuters to find alternate routes as dozens of police cars lined that stretch of I-40 during the investigation.
