CASSELBERRY, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is proposing improvements along State Road 436 from Lake Howell Road to the Orange County line in the city of Casselberry.
Officials say the purpose of this project is to repave this segment of State Road 436 to maintain a safe and reliable roadway surface.
At Chicory Lane, the project proposes to construct a pedestrian-activated signal and rebuild the existing bi-directional median to provide a safe crossing location for pedestrians and bicyclists. These improvements will be funded by the city of Casselberry.
Crosswalks will be repainted, and pedestrian curb ramps will be reconstructed as needed in accordance with current Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The project also includes plans to replace traffic signal detection affected by the resurfacing.
The above illustration of a signalized directional median opening is the type of crossing proposed at Chicory Lane. For this type of crossing, traffic on State Road 436 will have a continuous green light until a pedestrian activates the signal to cross.
The light will then change from green to yellow and then to red, and the pedestrian will be given the walk signal to cross. Officials say this type of crossing helps to reduce pedestrian conflicts with turning vehicles.
Tim Freed, the communications manager for the Florida Department of Transportation, District 5, said in order to gather feedback from residents, FDOT will hold an in-person project open house on Tuesday, Jan. 7, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Winter Park Elks Lodge, 4755 Howell Branch Road, Winter Park, FL 32792.
“We all drive these roads, and we all want to make sure everybody gets home safe. When it comes to this public meeting, we encourage everybody to get out to that meeting happening tomorrow to express their thoughts,” Freed said. “That feedback is what creates and drives these projects. You know, communities are at the center of everything we do, so we encourage it, and we look forward to seeing people at the meeting.”
To provide additional flexibility for people who want to participate, the FDOT is also offering online opportunities to get involved.
