The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting death of a man as Orlando police officers responded to calls about a domestic disturbance Monday night.

When Orlando police officers arrived about 9:13 p.m. at a home on Shining Willow Creek, which is near Silver Star and North Pine Hills roads, Timothy Woods was on the porch, and officers said he had a gun in his pocket, Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said.

Officers reported that when they approached Woods, he jumped a fence and ran, Smith said. Officers said they tried to stop him, but he kept running. So they shocked him with a Taser, and at some point, the gun fell out of Woods’ pocket, Smith said. Officers reported that Woods ripped out the Taser prongs and reached for his gun, so they shot him, Smith said.

Officers attempted life saving measures, but Woods, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from the police department.

"When someone is armed like that, he could have shot at the officers. The officers that are shooting back, rounds don't always go... it's dangerous for the whole community," Smith said.

The Orlando police officers were not hurt and have been placed on administrative leave, a standard practice during an FDLE investigation.
