The land, donated to Dave’s House, will be used to develop eight duplex units, offering permanent housing for approximately 30 individuals. The $11 million project is the first of its kind in Seminole County and is expected to be completed by 2027.

Ellen O’Connor, CEO of Dave’s House, said the project fulfills a long-standing goal to expand the organization’s reach beyond its current six houses in Orlando.

“The residents are living there as contributing members,” O’Connor said. “They pay rent, but we also get tremendous support from the community.”

For adults with mental health challenges, finding affordable housing is particularly difficult, O’Connor said. In addition to low-cost housing, Dave’s House offers supportive services that help residents thrive.

“For adults that have disabilities, it’s one step harder than it is for the average person who needs affordable housing. I think that is one of the aspects that was so appealing to the city of Sanford, which is looking to expand housing opportunities in the community,” said O’Connor.

Sanford Mayor Art Woodruff expressed enthusiasm for the project, calling it a much-needed addition to the area.

Dave’s House plans to collaborate with local governments, donors, businesses, and organizations to move forward with construction. O’Connor said the need for this type of housing is urgent.

“We get calls every day from families who don’t have anywhere for their loved ones to go,” said O’Connor. “So we’ve been working for a number of years to find the right property and have this become a reality.”

The project represents a significant step forward for mental health advocacy in Central Florida, aiming to provide permanent housing solutions for one of the region’s most vulnerable populations.

The organization is also hosting one of its largest fundraising events this week. The organization is hosting a silent auction that will close on Friday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.

The organization will host its Dave’s House Party on Nov. 23 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sheraton Orlando North Hotel for a live auction. All proceeds go to support the organization’s expansion to build affordable homes in Sanford.
