DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — In 1902, Daytona Beach first welcomed automobiles and motorcycles to drive on the hard packed sand.

Over the years, the “World’s Most Famous Beach” even welcomed the first official NASCAR race along the water.

What You Need To Know

  • Visitors to Daytona Beach can ride electric bikes on the sand, boardwalk and beyond the city limits for hours at a time
  • Magnum Bike Shop in Volusia County rents bikes that guests can take on several recommended excursions designed for the entire family
  • A favorite route is traveling from Dayton Beach to Ponce Inlet to see the lighthouse
  • Electric bikes allow riders to pedal or simply cruise effortlessly allowing a motor to do the work

While the speeds once traveled on the sand have slowed down, the love to drive on the beach is still as popular as ever.

Phil Reingowsky, who once worked on communication systems for NASCAR, is now introducing people to a new way to ride along the famous beach.

“This is the best way to take a look at Daytona Beach and explore everything,” said Reingowsky.

Reingowsky is the general manager for Magnum Bikes of Daytona, where his shop rents bikes designed to handle the sand and streets of Volusia County.

Many of the bikes are designed with extra wide tires and powerful electric motors.

“Normally, on a regular bike, there is only pedaling," Reingowsky said as he rode a bike on the sand of Daytona. "So, these are class three bikes. You get the choice. You can see where I’m not pedaling. I’m just using and feathering the throttle."

Anyone can come to the shop located at 204 Seabreeze Blvd, Daytona Beach and rent bikes, accessories, bike locks, and safety gear.

Bike pros will suggest several routes that riders can take depending on how far they want to travel.

Favorite rides include riding on the beach, the Daytona Boardwalk and Ponce Inlet’s Lighthouse and Museum.

“A lot of our customers come in and they are looking for places to go," Reingowsky said. "So, our south route is to come down here to Ponce Inlet to see this beautiful lighthouse."

The cost to rent an electric bike is $30 for one hour, $50 two hours and $75 four hours.

Rentals come with a lock and key, and optional safety gear is available.
