DELAND, Fla. — Volusia County has seen a great early voting turnout so far with around 40% of registered voters having cast their ballots as of Monday.
“We’re excited. This is an exciting time. We all knew this would be an unprecedented election year, and it certainly is turning out to be that way,” Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis said. “We’ve had a record number the first day we opened. We had over 11,000. Highest we’d hit before was about 9,900. Last Thursday, we hit 12,000. It kind of tapered off a little bit, but I think today is going to be hopefully another record setter.”
In terms of election safety and security, Lewis added the process has been smooth so far.
“This is the first election I really haven’t had to go out to early voting sites for any type of issues. It’s really has been smooth for a big presidential election year,” she said.
The Supervisor Of Elections Office is one of eight early voting sites available throughout the county.
Voters lining up outside the SOE’s office described the process as easy with the line moving fairly quickly and poll workers helping them.
“It was great. I thought the line was reasonable,” said Volusia County voter Siri Shepek. “We had expected a little worse, but, you know, it’s not lunchtime yet and people in line were very nice. The workers were very accommodating, and it was really expeditious. I mean, we were in and out about in 15 minutes.”
She says since becoming a citizen just over a decade ago, she’s made sure to cast her ballot.
“I’ve only been a citizen since 2013 and I think voting is the greatest privilege that comes with citizenship. So, I can’t miss that opportunity to participate in the democratic process,” Shepek said.
Voters can also drop off their vote-by-mail ballot at any of the early voting sites.
A secure ballot intake station is available at each early voting site during the hours of operations from Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
“Whether you wait or not, just do it. I mean, there’s no sense of not voting. I mean, it’s your right as a citizen here, and, you know, if you want to wait and be in the longer lines, more power to you, but come out and vote, do it now you know, take the time,” Volusia County voter John Donovan said.
Early voting runs until Nov. 2 in Volusia County.
