ORLANDO, Fla. — Central Florida election officials say that a record number of early voters continue to show up at polling places.
Orange County Supervisor of Election’s Glen Gilzean reported around 80,000 people had cast ballots during early voting as of Friday.
He said another 80,000 Orange County residents have voted by mail.
At a press conference on Friday, Gilzean also announced the launch of an interactive map that gives wait times at polling locations.
“So, in real time, so voters can know how long it will take to vote at our 22 locations across Orange County,” he said.
Officials say voters should have wait times no longer than 15 minutes to 30 minutes when going to vote.
Gilzean said that there have been some polling locations where voters waited an hour and a half to cast their ballot, and the county wants to prevent that as Election Day draws near.
“We have seen an unprecedented amount of turnout over the past four days," Gilzean said. "And my office, I’m using the powers under the executive order, to expand multiple sites across Orange County."
Just down the street from the announcement, Margaret Davis was busy casting her vote at the Winter Park Public Library.
“I have participated in every election and every city, state and county I have lived in since I was 18 years old,” she said.
The 68-year-old was surprised by how long the line to vote was inside the library.
“The line is long — I got in line at 12:10 and I just got out at 1:26,” she said.
Davis said she thinks the country’s plan to add more voting stations is a good idea.
“For some people, it’s hard to get out," she said. "So maybe if it was closer to their neighborhood. So maybe add more early voting sites."
The county plans to open 10 new express voting locations with the governor’s approval.
One new location includes Valencia College in Winter Park on Morse Boulevard, and is expected to open on Saturday for early voting.
Locations for the other new voting sites are expected to be announced soon and will be posted on the Supervisor of Elections website.
Voters are also lining up in other counties around Central Florida. In Brevard County, some voters report wait times as much as 50 minutes to fill their ballot.
Steve Zaring is one resident who reported having to wait that long for the voting process Friday.
“Election day is usually wild, so it’s an opportunity to get in and out,” says Zaring.
It’s something he has done for several previous election cycles.
“The people inside are just wonderful,” he said.
He’s not alone. The Brevard Supervisor of Elections Office says the county is shattering early voting records.
One day, more than 14,000 ballots were cast, overtaking the previous record of 13,000.
“My office and both parties are really trying to push to get voters out as much as possible ahead of election day, and I think it’s because parties want to know where they are at going into election day, they really look at those turnout numbers on the mail ballot, on the early voting, so they can see who they have to target on election day,” says Brevard Supervisor of Elections Tim Bobanic.
Bobanic says he has bolstered staff to handle the numbers and keep wait times low, including weekends which have been busy.
And he expects 2024 to be a banner year.
“We’re going to have a record setting for the entire course of the early voting period. This will be the highest we’ve ever had,” Bobanic said.
Zaring is proud to be a part of it.
“Exercise your right no matter who you’re voting for,” he said.
The 10 Brevard early voting sites are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends.
