PALM BAY, Fla. — After Spectrum News 13 reached out to Brevard County about a dimly lit traffic signal, they made changes.

  • Spectrum News 13 alerted Brevard County and they agreed to replace the box signal

William Baumgardt says he wrote into Traffic Inbox because he sees plenty of illegal right turns on red lights.

Drivers traveling westbound on Palm Bay Road, looking to turn right to head northbound on Babcock Street will often make the turn, even though there’s a "no turn on right" box signal.

“Somebody will be making a U-turn at the intersection and somebody will be more than likely illegally turning right on red and they'll almost crash into each other,” Baumgardt said.

Baumgardt said the box signal at the intersection was dimly lit so it was difficult to make out.

“It's hard to see that box because I don't think the light is bright enough,” he said.

Spectrum News alerted Brevard County to the problem and the county’s traffic operations program manager said they’d replace the no turn on right box.

Sure enough, they did.

“You can see it better,” said Baumgardt. “But I’m unconvinced it increases compliance. Still see people violating a lot. At least they can be held accountable a little bit easier.”
