BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A group dedicated to keeping the Space Coast clean is in need of more help as Keep Brevard Beautiful is desperate for more volunteers.

What You Need To Know

  • Pat Scott is a volunteer for Keep Brevard Beautiful

  • She has been volunteering for the group for more than 17 years

Each week, you’ll find Pat Scott prepping for work in front of her Friday Road home in Cocoa.

Out in the heat, she’s wearing her hat, safety vest and long sleeves.

Her gear is a trash picker and bucket.

Scott is a volunteer for Keep Brevard Beautiful, something she’s been doing since mid-2007.

“I have always taught my children you do something without your hand out, looking for something in return,” Scott says.

Scott’s experience has taught her a clean street deters people from tossing out their trash.

This section of road was adopted by her and her late husband.

“I enjoy doing it. It gets me exercise, like walking,” she says as she walks the roadway.

Scott is a warrior for Keep Brevard Beautiful, but the nonprofit is desperate for more volunteers.

Brevard County is seeing a tremendous growth spurt, with people moving to and vacationing in the area.

It means more trash to deal with.

“The increase in people, tourism, all together have really impacted the Brevard County area, so with all these people coming here, we need volunteers to manage the garbage that’s included with the people that come,” says John Nico, Keep Brevard Beautiful’s executive director.

Scott also says she hopes others will answer the call to keep the county roads and beaches clean.

She sets the example of the ideal volunteer as this week’s Everyday Hero.
