MOUNT DORA, Fla. — A 175-feet tall development in Mount Dora might be back on the table.
City council members voted Tuesday at their meeting to postpone a decision on a controversial development in the Wolf Branch Innovation District located on State Road 46 near the Wekiva Parkway.
What You Need To Know
- After a yearlong discussion between AMCO and Mount Dora, a special magistrate judge sided with the developer on a 175-foot tall project
- The judge recommended city officials approve the planned urban development application or potentially face further litigation
- The Mount Dora City Council delayed its vote for another two weeks regarding this development
Throughout the past year, the city and the developer, AMCO, were in special magistrate discussions. That judge sided with AMCO, recommending the city grant the application.
Now the city must decide whether to approve the development or potentially face future litigation against AMCO.
“It should during the approval process, it should require you the advisory bodies, staff, me, everybody to do our jobs a little differently and that’s putting it mildly,” Mount Dora City Attorney Patrick Brackins said.
Ephraim McCormick grew up in Mount Dora, a town that has always been a special place for him. He said he is not against the idea of this development, but he is against the height of the building, comparing it to the I-4 eyesore.
“A lot of us were blindsided by the whole situation. We tried to rally a lot of people and get the word out," McCormick said. "At the end of the day, the turnout last night was significantly less than last year. Mostly because most people in town didn’t know it was happening.”
He hopes elected officials also protect the City of Mount Dora and fight for what many residents want.
“The reason I’m fighting this is because I feel that the spirit of that is being eroded by every new approval of every gigantic, out-of-control developer, and I can’t stand by,” McCormick said. “What I hope is going to happen is the city council sees sense and that they recognize that the majority of their constituents does not want this to happen.”
The city of Mount Dora did not have any comment on the project on Wednesday. The developer, AMCO, has not yet responded to a request for comment.
