Stephan Sterns is charged with premeditated murder and dozens of counts of sexual battery. He is being held without bond at the Osceola County Jail.

What started out as a missing person’s case on Feb. 26 quickly became more, and it appears that something detectives noticed about his cell phone on the morning of Soto's disappearance was one of the red flags that kicked it off.

Soto was found dead in a wooded area of Osceola County on March 1.

The State Attorney’s Office for the Ninth Judicial District has released a 43 minute interview law enforcement had with Stephan Sterns.

In it, detectives bring up their concerns about Sterns' phone.

Law enforcement: I was checking your call history. I noticed you don’t have anything before this morning. Is that your usual?

Sterns: Uhhh. No. It’s stupid. I went to do an update yesterday morning. Um…I don’t know what the (expletive) — pardon me, I don’t know what the heck I did, but somehow during the massive OS update I managed to factory reset my phone.

That interview between detectives and Sterns happened the day after Soto went missing.

According to the recording, Sterns also went on to tell law enforcement he didn’t know where his head was at the day he reset his phone.

Despite the phone being reset, officers say they were able to access the deleted data and allegedly found several explicit photos and videos of a young girl that appeared to have been recorded in the Kissimmee home he shared with Soto and her mother.

While investigators with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office were searching the home of Madeline Soto, detectives were meeting with Jennifer Soto, Madeline’s mother and Stephan Sterns separately.

Jennifer Soto reportedly told detectives that while they were together, they would either all sleep in the same bed, or Madeline would sleep with her when Stephan wasn’t there. She was then asked if it was normal that Stephan and Madeline to sleep together without her being there, and she allegedly said yes.

Meanwhile, detectives say they also discovered several graphic images of Madeline Soto. They also discovered images and videos of Sterns performing sexual acts on Madeline.

The detective then printed out a picture from Stephan’s Google drive that showed a sex act. Jennifer Soto allegedly told investigators that she didn’t recognize anything in the picture.

A detective wrote in a report: "Upon review of the contents of Stephan’s phone, several images and videos were located which depicted the missing juvenile."

It also explained other graphic findings.

A search warrant was issued to search for Sterns DNA, blood, clothing, and photo’s of stern’s body parts.

When he began getting questions on the contents found on his Google drive he then asked for an attorney. After that he was placed under arrest.

He is currently facing the following charges:

  • Premeditated murder
  • Eight counts of sexual battery on a child under 12
  • Five counts of sexual battery of a child aged 12-18
  • Seven counts of lewd and lascivious molestation
  • 40 counts of unlawful possession of 10 or more images depicting a sexual performance by a child

According to the State Attorney’s Office, Sterns remains the sole defendant in the case.
