DeLAND, Fla. — The State Fire Marshal is investigating a Friday night house fire that left one person dead.

The fire broke out just after 10:30 a.m. at a single-story home in the 700 block of W. Beresford Avenue.

DeLand Fire and Volusia County Fire Rescue crews were met with heavy smoke upon entry of the home. One person was outside the home when units arrived.

During the initial search, one person was pulled from the home and firefighters and medics began life-saving measures on the patient. Volusia County EMS transported the patient to a local hospital where, sadly, the individual later passed away.

Crews provided oxygen to a dog who was rescued from the home.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family as two adults and one pet were displaced.

The fire, which originated in the kitchen, appears to be accidental in nature.
