MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Highland Mint will take center stage this weekend at one of the biggest events of the year — Super Bowl LVIII.

Before the first kickoff between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, some coin needs to be exchanged.

That coin stamped 0001 is created at the Highland Mint in Melbourne, Fla. And it’s grabbing the limelight Sunday before the players even touch the football.

The Highland Mint will make a limited edition of 10,000 coins. The first 100 go to the NFL, and the rest will be available for purchase by fans of the Chiefs and 49ers.

Garrett Snyder is a Highland Mint legacy, following in his dad’s footsteps.

In his 14 years, he’s done it all — from framer to shipping. But now, as assembly supervisor, he plays a key role, making sure the coins turn out perfect.

“It’s kind of nerve-racking, honestly. It’s a big deal," he said. "It’s going to go to the NFL to be flipped at the game, and a lot of times, it goes to the Hall of Fame afterward. So you’re trying to line it up perfectly, make sure it’s pristine.

“It’s really cool being a part of it, getting to see your hard work and dedication going toward something that’s revered around the world.”

Overall, the result of the game-opening coin toss is a close one.

Heads have turned up 27 times, and tails 30 times.
