DAYTONA BEACH SHORES — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday announced $100 million to help renourish beaches that suffered erosion from hurricanes Ian and Nicole, including $57.8 million for Central Florida counties on the Atlantic Coast.
What You Need To Know
- Volusia, Flagler, Brevard to receive $57.8 to help restore beaches
- Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the allocation Wednesday in Daytona Beach Shores
- It was part of $100 million awarded statewide
- The funds are on top of $20 million in emergency funds awarded in November
Daytona Beach Shores received hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, and some homes in Wilbur-by-the-Sea collapsed into the ocean.
“You saw many structures deemed unsafe in the Wilbur by the Sea area in Daytona because of this loss of sand and the erosion,” DeSantis said. “And we also saw neighbors to the north and south that were affected.
Of the total allocation, $37.6 million will go to Volusia, $17 million is for Flagler, and Brevard will receive $3.2 million.
DeSantis in December signed into law funding for the allocation to address coastal erosion resulting from the back-to-back storm events as part of Senate Bill 4A.
The allocation announced Wednesday is in addition to the $20 million awarded in November to Volusia to help local governments immediately address erosion concerns while other assessments were ongoing. Placing sand as quickly as possible is essential in order to avoid additional damages to public and private infrastructure.
A wide, healthy beach provides a buffer between storm waves and landward areas, preventing destructive waves from reaching the dunes and upland developments.
DeSantis said he’s happy the state could respond quickly to get money to where it’s needed and to help prepare for the 2023 hurricane season. He said Florida’s budget surplus made it possible for Florida to provide the funding quickly.
