VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Changes are coming to a Volusia County spot prone to crashes.
What You Need To Know
- Speeding drivers run into a ditch at dark South Glencoe Road curve in Volusia County
- Ricky Hendon, who lives near the curve, keeps up Christmas lights to help drivers
- Volusia traffic engineering plans to add signs and striping
- All property owners must agree for the county to add extra lighting
Ricky Hendon lives off of a curve on South Glencoe Road, south of State Road 44 in the New Smyrna Beach area and said speeding drivers miss the curve and end up in the ditch in front of his home.
“It’s really daunting standing out here and you hear all these cars and brakes and everything,” Hendon said.
“I’ve been trying to keep the ditch trimmed for the firefighters that have to respond to these crashes, so they’re not in all of this (brush),” he said.
The crashes occur at night, Hendon said.
“The Christmas lights were here when we moved in, and it wasn’t long after we moved in we discovered why,” he said.
The only thing drivers can see at night are the Christmas lights he keeps up all year long, he said
“We can’t get a light pole here at this corner to help protect motorists and let them know this corner is here,” Hendon said. “We leave (the Christmas lights) up to let them know our house is here.”
Drivers are speeding, not paying attention to the signs and ending up in the ditch.
Volusia County’s traffic engineering department studied this section of Glencoe Road back in July.
They found speeding is a problem, so the county plans to add more signs and striping to get drivers to slow down for the upcoming curve.
The department also looked at audible-vibratory markings in the travel lanes to alert drivers of the curves.
County engineers also recommend limiting heavy truck traffic on Glencoe Road.
Unfortunately for Hendon, the study didn’t recommend additional street lighting. All property owners in the area must agree to that change.
Hendon said he is hoping his neighbors can get on board with street lighting.
