ORLANDO, Fla. — Disney Cruise Line is buying a massive unfinished ship to add to its growing fleet.

  • Disney Cruise Line has announced that it acquired the unfinished Global Dream ship

  • The ship, which was being built for the now-defunct Dream Cruises, will be reimagined by Disney Imagineers

  • The ship will be renamed and is expected to be ready to set sail in 2025

The company announced Wednesday that it had acquired the 208,000-gross-ton ship known as the Global Dream, which was under construction in Germany for the now-defunct Dream Cruises.

The ship, which will get renamed, will be based outside the United States and offer vacations to “new global destinations,” according to Disney.

“Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, in a statement.

Disney said its Imagineers will reimagine the ship, which will feature “innovative Disney experiences,” dining and entertainment.

As with other ships in Disney’s fleet, the ship’s exterior will be given the Mickey Mouse-inspired color scheme along with signature red funnels.

Under its original design, the Global Dream would have held 9,000 passengers. But with Disney’s new plans for the ship, it will hold about 6,000 passengers and 2,300 crew members.

Disney did not disclose the cost of the ship but in a news release said it was acquired “at a favorable price.” The company said it will work with Germany-based shipbuilder Meyer Wertf to complete the ship. The company is also building Disney’s other upcoming ships — Disney Treasure to debut 2024 and a yet-to-be-named ship to debut in 2025.

This newly acquired ship is expected to be ready to set sail in 2025. It will be among the first in the industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels, Disney said.

The ship will join a fleet that includes the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and the new Disney Wish, which debuted this summer at Port Canaveral.

Disney said more details about the ship’s itineraries and onboard experiences will be shared later.
