COCOA, Fla. — Residents evacuated from a Brevard County neighborhood because of possible explosives are now allowed to return home after the Cocoa Police Department cleared the scene.

Cocoa police were investigating undetermined explosives from a home in the 300 block of Mc Leod Drive after a camper on the property broke out in flames overnight, officials said.

The Brevard County Bomb Squad was called out Wednesday to remove all potential hazards. According to the Cocoa Fire Department, the ordinance was rendered safe by the afternoon.

Firefighters were called out to the scene just after midnight on reports of a structure fire. When they arrived, first responders said they found a camper being used for storage on fire.

Officials said no one was home at that time of the fire, and there were no reported injuries.

During the investigation overnight, emergency personnel discovered explosives in the backyard, some of which had been going off throughout the night, causing damage to the home, Cocoa police reported. A patrol officer also reported seeing a tree on fire at a property directly north of where the original fire started.

The police department evacuated all surrounding homes out of precaution and called in the Brevard County Bomb Squad to locate all potential hazards.

A 1-mile stretch of the area was initially blocked off.

The State Fire Marshall is now investigating what caused the fire and no charges have been filed in connection with the incident.
