The city’s “Livable Orlando Age-Friendly Action Plan” focuses on ways to help older residents feel just as engaged in the town as younger people, according to our news partners at the Orlando Sentinel.
Some areas they are focusing on include outdoor spaces, housing, mobility, and social interaction.
Anita Platt has lived in the city beautiful since 1986. She loves getting outdoors, but transportation is a problem for her sometimes.
“It would be nice if there would be some sort of transportation offered that would go just to Lake Eola. Just take people to that one particular spot to spend an hour, two hours, an afternoon,” she said.
Platt said she would also love to see a dog park near her complex.
“I just think a fenced-in dog park up there would just be dynamite for so many people. For people who like dogs but feel apartments just aren’t the place for them, but still like to interact with them,” she said.
She also hopes for a place to socialize with her crowd.
“I had my fingers crossed for a long time for a diner over there on the corner of that empty space, where they put a health fare or whatever it is called and all of those condos,” Platt said.
The city council has to first approve the plan, which is set for Sept. 12. If approved, the next step is sharing the plan with AARP and the World Health Organization later this month.
