BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — Tucked away under age-old oak trees in the heart of Hernando County is a Victorian-era home with plenty of history and mystery. Florida on a Tankful explored the history of the May Stringer House.

What You Need To Know

  • The May-Stringer House is a Victorian-era four-story home in Hernando County

  •  It has 14 rooms and overlooks the City of Brooksville

  • It's open Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday, Friday and Saturday

Opening the doors to this classic Victorian-era home each morning is something tour guide Amanda has grown quite accustomed to in the past few months. With a keen eye for everything history, she's started as a volunteer tour guide in one of Hernando County's oldest restored homes, the May Stringer House.

Amanda might have only been a tour guide here a short time, but she's quickly learning everything there is to know about this historic home in Brooksville. In fact, the home itself is one of a kind, a four-story, seven gable gingerbread-trim 14-room “painted lady" Victorian-era home.

It's facts like these Amanda has become accustomed to sharing, but even more so is what you can find inside the home, everything donated from different people who have lived locally and around the country.

The old-school telegraph line, you can find on the third floor, one of Amanda's favorites, especially to show to children who come for school field trips. While each floor of this breathtaking Victorian has its own share of unique finds around every corner, for Amanda it's what resides on the very top floor she finds most compelling.

The attic of the May Stringer House is a place where more than a few paranormal sightings have occurred — and Amanda's favorite spot. You certainly won't have to twist her arm to hear a ghost tale or two on your guided tour.

It's a step into the past and a look at the history of the May Stringer home through their newest guide, one working hard to learn every bit of history and mystery surrounding the home.

The May Stringer House is closed on Sundays and Mondays, but the rest of the week it is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
