POINCIANA, Fla. — Construction crews are currently working to help ease congestion on a busy two-lane stretch of Poinciana Boulevard in Osceola County.
As part of the project, the roadway will be widened to four lanes between Trafalgar Boulevard and Pleasant Hill Road.
Up to 21,500 vehicles drive Poinciana Boulevard every day, and in 20 years, Osceola County officials say they expect that number to increase to 35,900.
Nazim Ali owns Green Lakes Farm, a horse ranch and martial arts gym, off Poinciana Boulevard. He said the current congestion on the roadway can really slow drivers down.
“Maybe take you, like, an hour to go home,” he said. “So I think that was a great idea to make four-lane Poinciana Boulevard. That’s going to ease up a lot.”
Adding an extra lane in each direction and building a center median is supposed to address safety concerns as well. From 2015 to 2019, there were more than 350 crashes, 25% of which resulted in injuries.
Ali said he often hears from students at his gym who say they get stuck in traffic before class begins.
“They can’t make it,” he said. “They say, ‘There’s an accident on the on the road and we can’t go through.’”
Eventually, Ali said he wants to build townhomes, a bigger petting zoo and a food truck park, while maintaining much of the untouched land.
He’s hopeful the roadwork will make it easier to get to his location.
The $80 million project is expected to wrap up in late 2026.
