PINELLAS PARK, Fla. —  Alexander Pharmacy is one of many local pharmacies that is struggling to keep at home COVID-19 test kits in stock.

What You Need To Know

  • COVID-19 test kits hard to find in stores locally

  • Alexander Pharmacy in Pinellas Park had 10 COVID-19 tests available on Wednesday

  • Dr. Trish Huynh says the warehouse she usually orders from has been out of tests for months

Dr. Trish Huynh opened Alexander Pharmacy in 2010. She says during the COVID-19 pandemic she's faced challenges. The newest one is trying to keep COVID-19 test kits in stock.

“The warehouse that provides us with everything, they ran out months ago," said Dr. Huynh.

Dr. Huynh says she's been trying to order the tests from different providers and searching for them online. On Wednesday, she had 15 available to start the day and by noon had 10 left. She expects to sell them all by Thursday.

“It's crazy. People are running around looking for tests everywhere. We must have had 20 or 30 calls for them when we didn't have them," said Dr. Huynh

She says some providers won't accept orders for less than 3,000 test kits.

"For one small pharmacy, that's a lot," said Dr. Huynh.

On Wednesday, the federal government launched a website where households can order up to four free COVID-19 test kits. But they won't ship until seven to 12 days after you place an order.

For people who need tests now, pharmacists like Dr. Huynh are trying their best to keep them in stock. For Dr. Huynh that means trying to find different providers online to order from. On Wednesday afternoon, she received another six kits she had ordered through Amazon.

“I get the maximum I can get. So now I can feel a little bit better having some backup," said Dr. Huynh.
