OVIEDO, Fla. — The Oviedo Mayoral Election is coming up in less than a month on Nov. 2nd. Two candidates are trying to unseat current Mayor Megan Sladek.

What You Need To Know

  • One of those candidates is Oviedo Mall Development Director Kevin Hipes

  • Hipes has been in Seminole County for 30 years

  • He owns two businesses, has three kids, and was a city commissioner in Sanford from 2003 to 2005

Oviedo Mall Development Director Kevin Hipes shows Spectrum News 13 what he calls his "contract with the people of Oviedo” and at the top of the list if elected mayor: "Traffic/Growth Management"

“Spread the traffic out over three major corridors, 419, Mitchell Hammock and then create one by Slavia," Hipes said.

At the mall, he already has plans to bring apartments, a hotel and more.

“That’ll create traffic internal flow and these folks will probably hop right on 417 and go here, creates no traffic on Mitchell Hammock," Hipes said.

The mall is his home away from home, with plans to bring empty stores back to life.

“I’d like to get technology jobs here, we do have incentives for that, I know most of those brokers," Hipes said.

He has agreed to give any mall commissions during his term to a non-profit.

He also addressed people saying a lot of his money comes from outside the area, which he said is true. But, he said it is from family and friends who support him from all over Florida, almost none of them have any land in Oviedo.

For months, he has been working to get the word out about his plans for the city, with contracts in hand, including in his own neighborhood.

Spectrum News 13 was with him as neighbors brought up concerns they would like him to address if elected.

“Well, the first thing is, the water bill," a neighbor said.

“I can certainly look into that. I’m all about getting expenses down," Hipes said.

He calls himself a re-developer. It is a skill he will use if elected, as the city continues to grow.

“I can negotiate with developers, sit on the city side of the table, make sure that the city gets a fair deal," Hipes said.
