ORLANDO, Fla. — After eight days since she was last seen, a body believed to be that of missing Miya Marcano was found, confirmed Orange County Sheriff John Mina during a press conference on Saturday afternoon.

“Obviously, this was not the update that I wanted to give to everyone today. Earlier today, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team was searching the area of the Tymber Skan apartments … and that’s when they discovered a body we believe to be that of Miya Marcano,” he announced. “Everyone wanted this outcome to be different.”

Mina said that while authorities notified her family, they are still waiting for a positive ID to be made.

“Although we are very certain of the identity, the positive identification will have to come from the medical examiner’s office,” he continued, adding that officials at this time cannot confirm the cause of death.

“We didn’t want this outcome,” he said.

It was around 10:45 a.m. on Saturday the body was found in a wooded area near the Tymber Skan on the Lake Condominiums at Skan Court in Orlando, said Mina.

It was the members of the response team who discovered the body. In addition to the body, a purse with Marcano’s identification was also found, but not the two cell phones or keys related to the case.

Cell phone records showed that 27-year-old Armando Manuel Caballero, the person of interest in the case, was in or near the Tymber Skan on the Lake Condominiums at Skan Court in Orlando on Friday, Sept. 24, between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., said Mina, adding that Cabellero lived in the complex at one point.

The 19-year-old Marcano was last seen on Friday, Sept. 24, at her apartment Arden Villas in Orlando at around 5 p.m.

Caballero was near the Tymber Skan apartments for 20 minutes on that Friday night and no records showed that he ever returned to that area before he killed himself on Monday, Sept. 27, Mina said.

Authorities focused their search for the young college student at different places and New Smyrna Beach was one of those areas. Cell phone records showed that Camballero was there Saturday, Sept. 25, between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., for about an hour in a marshy, wooded area, revealed Mina.

Mina said that authorities asked for six months worth of cell data for Camballero’s phone, which they received on Wednesday. Based on that data, it sent authorities to parts of Orange, Seminole and Volusia counties in search for Marcano.

In fact, on the night that Marcano went missing, Caballero had been in downtown Orlando and the Parramore section of the city. It is possible he did that to throw authorities off his trail, the sheriff theorized.

Mina said that authorities are not looking for any more suspects in the case.

“So, we are not looking for any other people. We believe pretty conclusively that Armando Caballero is responsible for this crime and there is not any other person or persons that we are looking for in this case,” he said.

Mina also shared his sympathies with Marcano’s family during Saturday’s press conference.

“As a community, you know, as a sheriff, as a father, you know obviously, we are grieving the loss of Miya. Again, we can’t imagine the pain and anguish that Miya’s her parents, her family, the loved ones and the friends and really our entire community have gone through and will continue to go through. On behalf of the men and women of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, we offer our deepest condolences to Miya’s parents, her family and her loved ones,” Mina expressed.

He said that Marcano’s parents are speaking with victim advocates and detectives.

Saturday afternoon, family attorney Daryl K. Washington released this statement.

“Learning the news of 19-year-old Miya’s disappearance has been incredibly dishearten. It is every parent’s worst nightmare. We’re beyond disappointed with the news that she has been found dead and we along with her family, friends and loved ones mourn for such a beautiful young lady with a promising future. We do want to thank the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the FBI, and everyone who has contributed to finding Miya. We want to stress that we believe that her disappearance and consequential death was 100% preventable and we intend to hold those responsible accountable to the full extent of the law. Policies must be in place to always protect women. We ask that the media and public continue to respect the privacy of the family as they grieve the death of Miya. The family will not be speaking with any media at this time; however, we will update the media with additional information in the coming days."

The night she went missing

Earlier in the week, Mina said Caballero made romantic advances towards Marcano, despite her reported lack of interest.

He also worked at Arden Villas apartment complex. He used a maintenance key to break into Marcano’s apartment at around 4:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 24, about the time she was last seen, Mina explained in one of the press conferences during the week.

Family members said they found Marcano's bedroom in disarray, with jewelry on the floor, adding that is not typical behavior of her.

“There was no forced entry, but Miya's bedroom window wasn’t locked Miya was kidnapped," said Semone Westmaas, Marcano’s aunt.

Caballero was found hanged in a garage building at the Camden Club Apartments in Longwood where he lived on Monday, according to a Seminole County Sheriff`s Office report. Investigators say he died of a suicide.

For the last few days, her family was conducting their own search with volunteers for the Valencia College student in east Orange County and parts of Seminole County while the Orange County Sheriff’s Office had been conducting its own investigation.

Marcano’s family said investigators feel she could have been within a 30-mile radius of the area. In fact, neighbors at Arden Villas located on 3303 Arden Villas Blvd. were notified on Wednesday night that their garages could be searched on Thursday, which did happen.

The complex promised residents there would be enhanced security at the gates, but when Spectrum News 13 left on Wednesday night, there was no sign of any added personnel at the entrance, which has upset some residents.
