Sofia Ortiz has worked as a housekeeper at Disney resorts for three years and recently became a leader in the union that represents workers like her.
She said it's been a long road to get to this week's pay raise.
“This week we get our last raise, housekeeping will be in $17 — I’m a housekeeper, so I’m very happy for that,” Ortiz said.
While $17 is the standard now, just three years ago housekeepers like her were only making $10.50 an hour.
Sunday's is the fifth and final raise in the Disney service union contract that she and others fought hard for for years. It comes days after Walt Disney World kicked off the celebration for its 50th Anniversary.
“We deserve that … here in Florida, the housing is so expensive, the gas is going up, everything is going up,” Ortiz said.
According to the national Low Income Housing Coalition, an individual would have to be making $21 an hour to afford a 1-bedroom apartment in the area at fair market rent.
Ortiz said she and others are just happy to be getting $17 an hour.
The state-mandated minimum wage in Florida also increased to $10 an hour this week.
And although the state is also slowly on its way to a $15 an hour minimum wage, Ortiz said she remembers how hard it is to live in Central Florida on $10 an hour.
“You live check by check with $10, maybe you don’t have enough for your rent or your car or to eat,” she said.
While Florida, and especially Disney World, are making good progress, Ortiz said they’ve still got a long fight ahead.
“We need more money, because here in Florida, it’s very expensive, everything,” she said.
All Walt Disney World workers will be brought up to at least $15 an hour starting Sunday.
