KENNEDY SPACE CENTER — The unofficial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has arrived at a NASA facility where it is anticipated that it will start to review NASA contracts, stated an email from the U.S. space agency’s current administrator.
What You Need To Know
- Acting NASA administrator says it is expected that DOGE will go over contracts
- It is not known what type of contracts DOGE will be reviewing
In an email from Acting Administrator Janet Petro to employees, she said that DOGE had arrived at NASA.
“DOGE Presence: The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has arrived onsite at the agency. We anticipate that they will start reviewing our contracts to find efficiencies,” Petro stated in the Feb. 14, email obtained by Spectrum News.
There were no other details about what exactly DOGE will be doing at NASA, which contracts it will be reviewing or at precisely which facilities DOGE personnel have accessed.
NASA’s Office of Communications News Chief Cheryl Warner confirmed with Spectrum News that DOGE was at a NASA site, but did not say which one and referred to DOGE for additional questions.
Spectrum News reached out to DOGE for comment and is awaiting a reply.
Elon Musk is the head of DOGE and is also the founder and CEO of SpaceX, which has a number of contracts with NASA, including the space agency’s Commercial Crew Program where people are transported to and from the International Space Station.
Petro’s email touched on other information, such as the plan to return employees to in-person work and a “workforce optimization” program that was part of an executive order issued by the White House on Feb. 11.
“Your leaders are tracking the recent executive order calling for agencies to undertake preparations to initiate large-scale reductions in force, among other things. NASA intends to comply with this and all executive orders. We are currently awaiting further guidance and will keep you posted as we learn more,” stated Petro.
Since President Donald Trump has reclaimed the White House, Musk and DOGE have been digging into federal agencies like the FAA.
The email also noted that the window to join a deferred resignation program has closed. The program is overseen by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. The program focuses on returning people to the office, reforming the federal hiring process “to focus on merit” and allow employees to resign while keeping all of their pay and benefits until Sept. 30, 2025.
The email also mentioned the Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost mission to the moon.
