DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — State troopers are investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a Daytona Beach police officer that happened before 9 p.m. May 21 at Mason Avenue and Jimmy Ann Drive.
- Woman, 80, incurred broken rib
- Officer sustained minor injuries
- FHP investigation underway
The other driver, 80-year Bessie Thomas of Daytona Beach, caused the crash by failing to yield the right of way to Officer Kieth Foreman, according to a police report.
Thomas, who was driving a 2012 Ford Fusion, incurred a fractured rib and was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach for treatment.
Foreman was treated at Ormond Memorial Medical Center for minor injuries, including an abrasion to his right arm, contusion to forehead, and small laceration to lip, the report said.
“Officer Foreman was on the way to a service call when the accident happened. Since it was a low priority call, his lights and sirens were not active,” Daytona Beach Police spokesman Messod Bendayan said in a statement.
The crash happened at 8:38 p.m.
Foreman was westbound on Mason Avenue, passing through the intersection of Jimmy Ann Drive, in a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria. Thomas was traveling eastbound on Mason Avenue, approaching the intersection of Jimmy Ann Drive, preparing to make a northbound turn onto Jimmy Ann Drive.
Thomas failed to yield to the patrol vehicle and entered his path, causing the crash, the police report said.
A witness backed up the version of events outlined by police.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.
