ORLANDO, Fla. — Ana G. Mendez University offers teaching certification classes that help Spanish-speaking educators teach in the U.S., including a Puerto Rican teacher displaced by the earthquakes.
Here are five things you should know about her story:
1. Ivis Vélez said she left Puerto Rico after the earthquakes and would like to continue teaching stateside.
2. Vélez can speak fluent Spanish but said she is still trying to learn English.
3. Vélez received her certification to teach in Puerto Rico in 2006. Another certification is needed to teach stateside, which Ana G. Mendez University offers.
4. Rosa Reyes, Ana G. Mendez University Education Program Director, said when they receive that certification they become "attractive candidates" because of the increase of the Hispanic population in Central Florida. Reyes said speaking both Spanish and English is important.
5. The goal for the university is passionate teachers like Vélez can help with teacher shortage in Florida. In January, Florida Education Association reported statewide there were more than 2,400 vacancies.
