A driver died Monday evening after she sped through a stop sign in Lake County and was hit by another driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

- FHP says alcohol was not involved in accident
At about 6:25 p.m., Demecia Gomez was driving a 1994 Honda northbound on Thrill Hill Road as Monica Johnson was driving a 2014 Dodge eastbound on Burlington Avenue.
According to the FHP, the 38-year-old Gomez “failed to stop at the stop sign” at the intersection of those two roads. The front of Johnson’s vehicle struck the left side of Gomez’s vehicle.
Gomez, of Eustis, was taken to Waterman Hospital. FHP’s media release did not state when or where Gomez died.
The 28-year-old Johnson, of Leesburg, was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center for minor injuries.
Both women were wearing seat belts, and no alcohol was involved, according to the FHP. The investigation is ongoing.
