The walkthrough attraction is expected to open later this year at EPCOT. It will feature interactive elements, including fountains, that will help visitors learn about the water cycle.
With construction still underway, ABC’s Good Morning America, shared a preview of the upcoming attraction.
“As guests enter into the experience, we really want them to be surrounded by this kind of lush Polynesian environment, surrounded with, of course, water and a few familiar characters from the film,” said Reid Ekman, lead concept designer, Walt Disney Imagineering, in the sneak peek video.
A dozen or so characters will be hidden in “nooks and crannies” throughout Journey of Water, according to Ekman. And just like in the 2016 film, music will be a big component in the attraction.
The experience will feature a number of interactive elements that respond to visitors’ presence. Although Ekman didn’t share specifics, he did hint at one of the ways visitors might interact with the water elements and effects.
“Part of engaging with water is seeing how it responds to us, and one way you greet your friend is by waving,” he said. “So I would imagine one way to greet water would be doing a similar thing.”
Last month, the attraction reached a milestone when the 16-foot-tall figure of Te Fiti was installed at the construction site. Ekman said Te Fit will be the “heart” of the experience.
Journey of Water is part of a massive, multiyear transformation underway at EPCOT. Other additions to the park include include a new entrance plaza, new restaurants and shows, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, which opened at the end of May.
In addition to Journey of Water, Disney World is due to open other attractions this year, including TRON Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom. The highly anticipated coaster is scheduled to open sometime in the spring.
