  • The calf is named Beni after the town in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

  • Beni is the first okapi born at Disney World since 2018

The calf, named Beni by the keeper team, was born at the resort on July 17 to first-time mom Olivia. The calf is the first okapi born at Disney World since 2018 and the fifth ever born at the hotel.

Beni is named after a town in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the only country where endangered okapis are found, according to Disney.

The calf currently stands just over 3 feet tall and weighs about 100 pounds. According to Disney, Beni could grow to be between 5 and 6 feet tall and weigh up to 650 pounds.

For now, Beni and Olivia remain in their backstage habitat, where the two are bonding. In the coming months, Beni will make his debut on the resort’s Pembre Savanna.

News of Beni’s birth comes just days ahead of World Okapi Day, which is set for Tuesday. Okapis live in rainforests and have black and white strips on the hindquarters and front legs to camouflage themselves among the trees. Despite looking similar to zebras, okapis are closely related to giraffes.

Currently, there are an estimated 20,000 okapi in the world. Beni’s birth was part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan.
