ORLANDO, Fla. — A wrong-way driver caused a fatal crash on State Road 528, causing an hours-long shutdown early Tuesday morning, according to state troopers.

FHP records say that a 2015 Chevrolet van was headed eastbound on S.R. 528, also called the Beachline Expressway, when a 2014 Dodge SUV traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes crashed head-on into the van.

It appeared one of the vehicles caught fire.

The driver of the van, 31-year-old Christopher Canela, of Winter Springs, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, 31-year-old Jason Torrens of Orlando, was seriously hurt and taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Both were wearing seabelts, FHP said.

A toxicology test was conducted on Torrens, and the results are pending, troopers said.

The eastbound lanes of State Road 528 were reopened shortly before 6 a.m. after the fatal crash shut them down for about four hours. About a 10-mile stretch of the eastbound lanes on State Road 528 were shut down, from Narcoosee Road to State Road 417.
