The teams entered the second leg of the round of 16 with an aggregate score of 0-0. With the edge in scoring on Tuesday night, the Tigres advanced to the quarterfinals.

Orlando City also lost to the Tigres at the 2023 Champions Cup, with the teams playing to a draw in the first leg and the Tigres prevailing in the second leg.

Marcelo Flores and André-Pierre Gignac gave the Tigres a jump on the Lions with goals in the 13th and 20th minute.

Facundo Torres got the scoring started for Orlando City on a penalty kick in the 24th minute.

In the 68th minute, a headed ball came off the bar and down onto Pedro Gallese after a diving effort. The ball bounced off Gallese, and officials ruled it was over the line when he grabbed onto it, giving the Tigres a 3-1 lead on an own goal.

Sebastián Córdova completed the scoring for the Tigres with a goal in the 81st minute to put the Mexican team up 4-1.

Orlando City's Martin Ojeda's goal in second-half stoppage time pulled the Lions to 4-2, but they could not close the gap.

"One of the things that we remarked a lot during the days that we were preparing for the game was trying to be more concentrated on the start. The [recent] games have been sloppy for us. Somehow today, despite the willingness to do it and the concentration that we expected to have, Tigres found a place where they scored two goals," Orlando City coach Oscar Pareja said. "It was hard for us to adapt to the field, to the climate, to the [stadium] atmosphere. We felt Tigres came [at] us, and we didn’t have an answer in that moment. But after that, I thought we leveled the game very well. We were close to tying it, and then we started matching them up much, much better. But the start of the game just cost us a lot. ...So, at this point we need to rejoin, move on and concentrate on the league [play].”

The Lions return to Major League Soccer action at 7 p.m. Sunday against Atlanta United FC on the road. They are still looking for their first regular-season victory in 2024.
