MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins added needed linebacker help on Tuesday, agreeing to terms with veteran Shaquil Barrett on a one-year contract worth up to $9 million, his agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed.

What You Need To Know

  • Former Buccaneer Shaquil Barrett agreed Tuesday to sign with the Dolphins in free agency

  • Miami will head into the 2024 season with Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips coming back from serious injuries

  • The Dolphins lost defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, lineman Robert Hunt and edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel on Monday

  • Center Aaron Brewer, a former Tennessee Titan, reached a contract with Miami

The agreement came a day after the Dolphins saw an exodus of defensive players Monday, the first day NFL teams were allowed to negotiate with free agents.

Barrett, 31, spent the past five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he had 45 sacks, 15 forced fumbles and three interceptions. The inside linebacker fills an immediate need at the position, as pass rushers Bradley Chubb (ACL) and Jaelan Phillips (Achilles tendon) could miss time early in the season as they work their way back from serious injuries — though the team hopes to have them back in time.

Barrett — undrafted out of Colorado State in 2014 — has won Super Bowls with the Buccaneers (2020 season) and Denver Broncos (2015 season) and was a Pro Bowl selection in 2019 and 2021. He led the league with 19-1/2 sacks during his first season in Tampa in 2019.

In 2023, Barrett had 52 tackles, 4-1/2 sacks and three forced fumbles. He played only eight games in 2022 because of a torn Achilles tendon.

Tampa Bay released Barrett earlier this month in a move that saved the team nearly $5 million against the salary cap. He was three years into a four-year, $72 million deal that he signed in 2021.

Barrett joins former Seattle Seahawk Jordyn Brooks and former Cleveland Brown Anthony Walker Jr. as free agents added to Miami's linebacker group.

On Monday, the Dolphins lost defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, who agreed to a four-year, $110 contract with $84.75 million guaranteed with the Las Vegas Raiders, agent David Mulugheta said.

Wilkins, 28, played his first five seasons for the Dolphins, with whom he became one of the NFL’s top run stoppers. He set a league record in 2022 for his position with 98 tackles. The Raiders were 20th last season in run defense, allowing 118.5 yards per game.

Wilkins’ ability to get to the quarterback had been questioned after he recorded 11-1/2 sacks through his first four seasons. However, he made a career-high nine sacks last season, fourth among tackles.

The 2019 first-round draft pick has started 77 games over five seasons.

Edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel also left Miami and will get a two-year, $20 million deal with $14 million guaranteed from the Minnesota Vikings, according to a person with knowledge of those terms who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract can’t be finalized until the signing period begins Wednesday.

Former Dolphins safety Brandon Jones also agreed to a three-year deal worth up to $22.5 million with the Denver Broncos, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

Miami lost some significant talent on the offensive line, too. Guard Robert Hunt will get a five-year, $100 million contract that includes $63 million guaranteed from the Carolina Panthers. The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Hunt started 55 games over the past four seasons with the Dolphins. Hunt was a second-round draft pick by Miami in 2020.

It wasn't all bad news for the Dolphins, however. They have reached agreement on a three-year, $21 million contract deal with former Tennessee Titans center Aaron Brewer, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

Brewer will likely replace Connor Williams, Miami’s starting center for the past two seasons who is now a free agent. Williams was Pro Football Focus’ top-rated center in 2023 before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in December. Brewer, 26, started every game the past two seasons and has experience at center and guard. He entered the NFL in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Texas State.

Brewer will join a unit that will return veteran left tackle Terron Armstead, who considered retirement at the end of last season.

The Dolphins didn't have much money to spend in free agency this year because they signed big-money free agents wide receiver Tyreek Hill, linebacker Bradley Chubb, Armstead and cornerback Jalen Ramsey in recent seasons.
