TAMPA, Fla. — In their first season of the post-Tom Brady era, the NFL schedule-makers did not do the Tampa Bay Buccaneers any favors.

The Bucs begin the season on the road on Sept. 10 against the Minnesota Vikings, who won the NFC North Division, and in Week 3 play their only Monday night game of the season at home against the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles.

What You Need To Know

  • The NFL schedule release was held Thursday night

  • The Chiefs and Lions will open the season

  • The Jaguars play twice in London, and the Dolphins go to Germany

  • Tampa Bay and Miami open on the road and have tough early schedules

Other marquee matchups come on the road in Week 7 in a Prime Video game on Thursday, Oct. 26 against the Buffalo Bills, who won the AFC East last season, and at the Green Bay Packers on Dec. 17, when chances are good there could be snow. Even better news for Tampa Bay is this season will be the first for Green Bay since it traded MVP Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets. The Bucs probably won't even have to face Rodgers in the teams' Week 2 preseason matchup at MetLife Stadium.

Fans who dream of spending their holidays watching the Bucs are in luck because they play the Jacksonville Jaguars at home on Christmas Eve and the New Orleans Saints at home on New Year's Eve.

The Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers also will be coming to Raymond James Stadium.

Tampa Bay's bye week comes in Week 5.

On Wednesday, the NFL announced that Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars will become the first NFL team to play two international games in the same season when they spend back-to-back weeks in London, Weeks 4 and 5.

The Jaguars will host the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 1 and visit the Bills at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 8. The Jaguars were set to play two designated home games in London in 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic canceled those plans.

“Hosting the Falcons at Wembley Stadium will be awesome only to be followed by playing on the road against the Bills at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium,” Lawrence said in a statement. “I’m pumped for the experience and know the support from Duval will be strong at both games.”

The Jaguars host the game at Wembley Stadium as part of their multiyear commitment to playing in Britain.

Jacksonville also opens its season on the road against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 10 and then faces the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs at home in Week 2 on Sept. 17.

The remaining home opponents are the Houston Texans, Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans, Cincinnati Bengals, Baltimore Ravens and Carolina Panthers. The game against Carolina is on New Year's Eve.

Jacksonville's bye week comes in Week 9.

The Miami Dolphins don't face an easy start either.

Four of their first seven games are on the road, including a Week 4 meeting at AFC East winner Buffalo on Oct. 1 and NFC champion Philadelphia in a Week 7 Sunday night matchup on  Oct. 22. They open at the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 10 and at the New England Patriots in another Sunday night game on Sept. 17.

The Dolphins play the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs on Nov. 5 in Germany.

The Dolphins' only Monday night game comes in Week 14 against the Tennessee Titans on Dec. 11 at Hard Rock Stadium. They close their regular season at home against division foe Buffalo, which at least means they won't have to play on a frozen field for that matchup.

Miami also plays holiday games, at home against the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Eve, and on the road against the Baltimore Ravens on New Year's Eve.

The Dolphins' matchups against the Jets and Rodgers don't come until Week 12, a Black Friday game at MetLife Stadium on Prime Video, and at home Week 15 on Dec. 17.

They have to wait until Week 10 until they have their bye week.

The rest of the league

Patrick Mahomes and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will kick off the 2023 season against the upstart Detroit Lions in a matchup of high-powered offenses, while Rodgers will make his New York Jets debut on “Monday Night Football” against the Buffalo Bills.

Coming off their second championship in four seasons, the Chiefs will host the Lions on Sept. 7 on “Thursday Night Football.” The Lions finished 9-8 last season after a 1-6 start and knocked Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs with a 20-16 victory at Lambeau Field in the final regular-season game.

Mahomes, the two-time NFL MVP, led the Chiefs to a 38-35 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Fans will get their first look at Rodgers in his new green-and-white No. 8 Jets jersey when New York hosts Josh Allen and the Bills in an AFC East matchup on Sept. 11.

Other marquee games include a rematch of the NFC Championship Game in Week 13. Jalen Hurts and the Eagles will host the San Francisco 49ers on Dec. 3. The Eagles knocked quarterback Brock Purdy out of the conference title game on their way to a dominant 31-7 win. Purdy had elbow surgery in the offseason but should be ready by the time the teams meet again.

Mahomes and the Chiefs will host AFC West rival Las Vegas in the early game on Christmas Day, and the Dallas Cowboys will visit San Francisco on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 5.

The New England Patriots also announced seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady will be honored at the team’s home opener. Brady, who led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, retired in February after spending the past three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In the other international games, the Tennessee Titans will host the Baltimore Ravens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 15, and the New England Patriots will host the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 12, also in Frankfurt.
